The goal of the International Baccalaureate is to develop students who will build a better world through intercultural understanding and respect.

The International Baccalaureate (“the IB”) is known for its academic rigor and highly respected among colleges and universities worldwide.

Most families are familiar with the IB in association with the Diploma Program for students in 11th and 12th Grade. Many are surprised to learn that the IB includes an early childhood and elementary school program called “the PYP” or Primary Years Program and a middle school program called “the MYP” or the Middle Years Program.

Pine Street School is just one of just a few in the world—that is an authorized PYP school and candidate MYP school – offering Mandarin Chinese and Spanish from Nursery ones through 8th grade and German for middle school.

In addition to exploration of our city, we foster a truly internationally-minded Middle School experience, where students will be able to participate in international travel experiences that allow them to engage with the world in authentic ways.

Each year of Middle School, students will travel to a unique destination. Prior to the trip, students will engage in research and action-oriented projects that connect with the location they are visiting.

During 6th and 7th grades, students will visit Costa Rica and/or Iceland, alternating each year. In 8th Grade, as a capstone to their Middle School experience, students will embark on a trip with Mandarin language connections.

At Pine Street School, students experience a thoughtfully designed language immersion journey from infancy through 8th grade. Our Ones and Twos classrooms offer Trilingual Immersion with three rotating teachers—one each for Spanish, Mandarin, and English. In Preschool 3s and 4s, children transition to Dual Immersion with two dedicated teachers in either Spanish/English or Mandarin/English. From Kindergarten onward, students engage in Partial Immersion, spending a third of each day in the target language. Language learning is enriched through cultural field trips and international travel in Middle School.

Our goal is to develop conversational fluency, cultural competence, and readiness for advanced placement in high school.
