At Pine Street Middle School, students enter a dynamic phase of growth where independence, identity, and purpose take center stage. With a focus on inquiry, interdisciplinary learning, and global citizenship, our middle schoolers are empowered to explore their passions, tackle real-world challenges, and lead with confidence as they prepare for high school and beyond.

Becoming Who They Are

Our Middle Years Programme (MYP) builds on the foundation laid in elementary school, guiding students in grades 6–8 to deepen their understanding of real-world concepts through inquiry and interdisciplinary learning. With a third of each day spent in Spanish, Mandarin, or German, students continue to grow as global communicators while exploring big ideas across traditional subjects. Our boutique middle school experience prioritizes academic rigor, personal growth, and a supportive community—equipping students with the skills and confidence to thrive in high school and beyond.

At Pine Street School, Middle School students engage in a diverse array of courses grounded in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), fostering both academic rigor and personal growth. Each year, students are required to take the following core courses:

(Students can choose from a variety of visual or performing arts classes, including Band, Drama, Photography, and Painting.)

In addition to the core curriculum, Middle Schoolers have the opportunity to explore a variety of electives, which may vary based on student interest, including:

This flexible and enriching curriculum encourages students to pursue their passions, develop new skills, and engage deeply with the subjects they love. At Pine Street School, we believe that a well-rounded education prepares students not only for high school but also for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

At Pine Street School, we believe in fostering a truly internationally-minded Middle School experience. Our Travel Program offers students the opportunity to participate in international travel experiences that allow them to engage with the world in authentic and meaningful ways.

Each year, Middle School students will embark on a unique journey to a different destination. Prior to each trip, they will participate in research and action-oriented projects that connect with the culture, history, and environment of the location they will be visiting.

In 6th and 7th grades, students will alternate visits to Costa Rica and Iceland, immersing themselves in the rich natural and cultural landscapes of these incredible destinations.
As a capstone to their Middle School experience, 8th graders will embark on a special trip that incorporates Mandarin language connections, enhancing their language skills and cultural understanding.

These travel experiences not only enrich students’ education but also cultivate a sense of global citizenship, encouraging them to make connections and reflect on their place in the world. At Pine Street School, we’re excited to provide our students with the tools and experiences they need to thrive as compassionate, informed global citizens.

Understanding that the high school admissions process can be daunting for both students and families, Pine Street School has established a valuable partnership with Smart City Kids and Smart City Tutors, one of New York’s premier education consulting firms. This collaboration is designed to equip our 7th and 8th graders with the tools they need to excel in high school and beyond. Here’s how we support our students:

Weekly Test Prep Tutoring: Starting in 7th grade, students participate in 90-minute test prep sessions every six days. These tailored sessions focus on strengthening skills and building confidence as students prepare for their high school entrance exams.
Specialized Workshops for Families: We offer workshops specifically designed to help families navigate the high school admissions process. These sessions reduce stress and empower parents and students with the knowledge needed for success.
1:1 Consulting for Every Student and Family: Each student receives personalized consulting sessions to ensure they are matched with the high school that best fits their academic and personal needs, enhancing their chances for success.
