Innovation & Technology
Technology is used with purpose at Pine Street School, helping students think critically, create thoughtfully, and understand the opportunities and responsibilities that come with emerging tools.
Students at every grade level explore technology as a tool for creativity, problem-solving, and responsible digital citizenship. In the elementary years, students use iPads for experiences such as coding, animation, and math practice. As they grow, this develops into more advanced work with robotics, AI, app development, and design. In Middle School, students deepen this work through Technology & Innovation, using platforms and tools such as Swift Playgrounds, Scratch, Sphero, micro:bit, drones, and emerging AI technologies. Across the IB curriculum, technology supports inquiry, creative thinking, communication, media literacy, and the ethical use of information.

Designing, Building & Testing
In the Design Lab, students use tools including 3D printers, sewing machines, cameras, and green screens to turn ideas into something they can build, test, film, and refine. In Middle School, this connects directly to MYP Design, where students research problems, develop ideas, create solutions, test their work, and improve it. Recent projects have included website design, app prototyping, 3D design, game design, and documentary filmmaking.
Annual AI Design Sprint
Each year, Middle School students take part in an AI Design Sprint focused on emerging AI tools and real-world problem-solving. Teams define a problem, develop a solution, create a prototype, and pitch their work to a panel of industry experts. The experience emphasizes experimentation, iteration, and using AI thoughtfully without handing the thinking over to the technology.
Using Technology Responsibly
As students gain access to more powerful tools, they also learn the responsibilities that come with them. Information and media literacy, responsible research, ethical use of information, and thoughtful digital habits develop alongside technical skills.
Technology for Everyday Learning
Pine Street School is recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for its integration of technology into teaching and learning. Through our one-to-one MacBook program, students have consistent access to tools for research, writing, coding, design, collaboration, and media creation.
